Item Description
9.5x11.75" with 258 pages. Written by Tom Fleming and published by H. Murphy ©1917 Tom Fleming. Published in Newark, New Jersey, book deals with notable citizens of the town at that time. Almost every other page has a detailed caricature of a specific along with a theme dealing with their profession. Subjects include Chief of Police, architects, tailors, Pierce-Arrow cars factory owner, judges, teachers as well as persons depicted as historical or fictional characters including Gulliver, MacBeth, Atlas, Hamlet, Vulcan, Midas, Hercules, Ben Franklin and Richard III. The chairman of the Essex County Republican Committee is depicted with an elephant. Most illustrations are bw, with a few in blue and orange tones and one in full color. "Author's Autographed Edition" bookplate is affixed to inside front cover and is signed by Fleming in black ink and hand-numbered 139. Intricately detailed account of town life in the early part of the 20th century. Covers have wear to corners and spine, Fine. First page has a .25" tear at bottom of spine, o/w pages have some light aging and are Fine/VF overall. Scarce book, first signed edition we have ever seen.
