Item Description
21x23.75" hardcover library volume collects issues of Missouri newspapers from Nov. 1 - Dec. 31, 1930. Headlines of note include Haile Selassie being crowned Emporer of Ethiopia, articles mentioning Al Capone with photos of a soup kitchen he organized, Hoover's attempt to stimulate economy, Tom Mix's divorce and mentions of Stalin and Einstein (both pictured). Comics include Moon Mullins, Smitty, Tillie The Toiler as well as Ripley's Believe It Or Not cartoons and President Hoover editorials. Photos depict boxer Jack Dempsey, golfer Bobby Jones, proposed Golden Gate Bridge (7 years before construction), Governor of New York Franklin D. Roosevelt on "Possum Hunt," Knute Rockne, comedian Joe E. Brown, Greta Garbo and John Wayne. Advertising of note includes ads for Mae West "Sex" movie, various Santa ads, Hoover Vacuums, "Oreo Sandwich" cookies, Marx Brothers "Animal Crackers" movie, Harold Lloyd, Eddie Cantor and Will Rogers ads, Lucky Strike/Chesterfield cigarettes, Amos 'N' Andy movie ad as well as "Dracula" stage show (without Bela Lugosi). A special note, volume contains several installments of Agatha Christie story "Murder At The Vicarage." Scattered large tears with one page almost loose and one-quarter of another page loose, moisture stains at extreme margins as well as numerous small chips along bottom margin. Cover has 1" of heavy wear to spine bottom. VG.
