Item Description
17.5x21.5" hardcover library volume collects issues of Missouri newspapers from May 1-31, 1933. Headlines of note include several articles and editorial cartoons concerning artist Diego Rivera's dismissal from RCA Building mural project. Other headlines include FDR and his public works, New Deal/Tennessee Valley Authority, Mahatma Gandhi fast, early article on TV and insight into Nazi Germany including the beginning of Nazi book burnings and article entitled "Hitler Puts 18,000 Opponents In Camp." Comics include Popeye, Skippy, Bringing Up Father, Mutt & Jeff, Toonerville Folks, Ella Cinders, various Uncle Sam editorial cartoons and full-color Sunday comic sections. This section is smaller than the rest of the daily news sections, resulting in pages remaining VF. Photos depict the beginning of Mt. Rushmore, the 1933 Chicago Exposition, Hooverville, Civil War Confederate veterans, Alcatraz Prison, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, boxers Max Schmeling, Jack Dempsey and Max Baer, as well as photo showing Hitler and Hindenburg together, early "Autogyro" helicopter, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Sonja Henie and FDR. Advertising of note includes ads for Falstaff Beer, Quaker Oats, Chesterfield/Camel Cigarettes, Wrigley's Gum, Hire's Root Beer, Rice Krispies and circus ads. Front inside blank page is sliced and pages have scattered aging with about a half-dozen scattered large tears with moderate tears to glossy "Rotogravure" picture sections. .5" piece missing to top of spine.
