Item Description
Sign is 9x19.75" on glossy paper copyright 1952 Premium Specialties, Chicago, Ill. Does not have any Kellogg's identification but offers and pictures 18 of the 86 buttons in the Kellogg's Pep set. Sign reads "18 Different Comics" and pictured buttons include Dick Tracy, Orphan Annie, Smilin' Jack. Probably prepared for the final offering of these buttons in 1952 and these buttons may relate to the variety which have blank backs rather than "Kellogg's Pep." Sign has three vertical fold lines, scattered margin wear, 1" tear at top center, trace of dust soiling but still bright and glossy appearance. Displays Fine. Comes w/two pieces of original art, an 11.5x21" stiff white art board w/complete art in bw india ink as well as rough layout on translucent paper done in colored pencil. This layout lays over top of the bw art sheet done in same red/blue/yellow color used on the sign but art is just sketched out and images of the boy wearing the beanie and the buttons themselves are not distinct. For some reason, this rough layout was only partially done although the design is complete as it appears on the sign from the left edge over to the end of the word "Free." The text on the right half that starts "Get These Swell" and all that follows beneath it only has a few letters of each word along the left edge done in colored pencil while the remaining pencils were never filled in. This sheet has inked notation and hand-inked copyright at bottom right, scattered margin wear including 1" tear at bottom, a few small edge flakes, pair of long diagonal pencil streaks running vertically at center. The art board has complete sign design, all in bw india ink except for the Pep pin example pictures which are all cut out photostats. Photostat of the Uncle Walt button has bw artwork over top of it. Individual photostat of the Harold Teen button is missing. Has various production notations on bottom margin, reverse has long streak of glue staining where the rough layout overlay was originally attached. This sheet also has trace of margin aging and dust soiling but overall appearance is still bright and clean. Fine and unique. This is a file copy from the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold accompanied by a letter to that effect from Gordon Gold.
