Item Description
4.75x7.5", 11 pages. Preserved in larger 6x9" library binding. Undated, but c. 1870s. Signed by Nathan Armsby Woodward "With Compliments N.A. Woodward, Batavia N.Y." Lengthly 11 pages consisting of 46 verses all pertaining to the fall of "King Cotton," slavery and the south. A sample of the text reads "Jeff Davis In Chain/Every Slave Set Free/And Freedom Then Held A Grand Jubilee." Mentioned are Lincoln, Wide-Awakes, John Brown, Harper's Ferry, Sherman, Grant, Jefferson Davis, Boys in Blue, Rebs in Gray, etc. Poem may have been inspired as a response to a Harper's Weekly poem published in Feb. of 1864 titled "King Cotton." Poem is published on the press of David H. Gildersleeve/New York. Library blind stamp to title reads "Bowdoin College Library/Brunswick Me." Pages separating a bit. Some leaves pasted together at inner seam (no loss). A few pencil corrections, probably made by the author himself. A very few copies were published . We know of only 2 other copies surviving. Tanning to outer binding. Light fade to inscription/signature. Interesting and Rare. Comes with Hake's COA. Fine.
