Item Description
Original art, each approximately 17x27". A matching pair. Both dated Mar. 7, 1937. Prior to receiving a dedicated strip of his own in 1938, Donald Duck starred in the "Silly Symphony" Sunday for 14 consecutive months in 1936-1937. The "Silly Symphony" Sunday usually ran as the topper to the "Mickey Mouse" Sunday page. "Silly Symphony" pen and ink art by Al Taliaferro and corresponding "Mickey Mouse" pen and ink art by Floyd Gottfredson. We know of only 3 matching Mickey Mouse/Silly Symphony pairs from the 1930s; of these, only 2 feature Donald Duck in the Silly Symphony segment, and only 1 (example we are offering) retains the famous "Silly Symphony" logo in the Donald title panel. The Mickey Mouse segment here is rather obviously inspired by the then- recent Mickey Mouse animated short "On Ice" of 1935. Exc. From the estate of Bruce Hamilton.
