Item Description
14x22" poster, one of three in this auction, once owned by a 1960s SNCC member at the University of Alabama. Photo has photographer's name in small lettering and larger type for the Georgia headquarters address of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. Poster shows zone number rather than Zip Code so is likely c. 1962. SNCC began in 1960 with $800 grant from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The group organized sit-ins at segregated lunch counters, freedom rides and was active in 1963 March on Washington, Mississippi Freedom Summer and Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. This is the most famous of four posters by Lyon we know of. "One Man/One Vote" is very lightly toned but clean. A few light horizontal creases show little. Left edge has 3/16" dot missing. Right edge has two tiny 1/8" tears that barely show. Corners have tiny tack hole areas and these have small neat repair on reverse of each corner using tiny spot of black tape and one corner has small spot of archival tape. Sales of this poster have exceeded $1,000. Second we've seen. Rare.
