Item Description
7-1/8x7.5" typed letter on his personal stationery and signed by Yankee Hall of Famer. Stationery reads "Lou Gehrig Larchmont, New York." Written to "Mr. Clifford Elwell 36 Elmer Street Bridgeton, New Jersey." Dated June 2, 1939, just over one month after his final game on April 30. This letter was written just under three weeks before he would find out he had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) bringing about the end of his career and causing his death. Since then, the disease has been more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Letter reads "Dear Clifford: Many thanks for the invitation and nice gifts you sent my family and I. I appreciate your very kind words that you expressed about me and my accomplishments. I just try to play to win, work as a team and make every effort count. I think that our team this year has the goods to win another Series and I would count on that happening. The boys are playing hard to beat and are healthy. If you and your family ever make it down to the ball park, please let me know and it will be said. I just want to say thanks again and I will wish you-best in health. Gratefully Yours, Lou Gehrig." Gehrig's name is boldly signed in black ink at bottom of page. Horizontal and vertical creases as folded for mailing. Page has a .25" tear at upper left corner o/w Exc. Bold and beautiful signature.
