Item Description
3-1/8" wide by 4.5" tall listed as Hake #3181 and Sullivan/DeWitt 1888-54. From a small loop at the very bottom, a brass anchor-shaped accent is missing and a generic ribbon is missing from a narrow bar running across the mid-section reverse of the badge. The obverse is boldly lettered "National Association of Democratic Clubs" with the "1888" date above the sepia-toned images. The 1-5/8" image area has numerous small craze lines with some tiny broken pieces of the photographic emulsion above Thurman's head but all these pieces remain in a fixed position, with none loose, so the fact that a few tiny pieces are adhered to the glass while a few others seem to be adhered to the reverse backing, is barely evident unless viewed by magnification. On their jackets, there are a few scattered air spots under the glass which makes for some slightly darker toned areas on their coats. Overall condition is Fine and the piece still displays beautifully. This is among the largest and most impressive of all pre-1896 brass shell badges.
