Item Description
For ten issues, Bucky and Toro, the sidekicks of Captain America and The Human Torch, teamed up with a gang of kids from New York to become the “Young Allies.” The concept was created by Simon and Kirby and first appeared in the Spring of 1943 in issue #1 of this title. Historians note that with issue #1, Simon and Kirby may have created a whole new genre, “kid gang comics.” This one differed from the others that two of the members, Bucky and Toro, were superheroes. The action stayed more in the realm of superheroics. The other members of the New York gang were Knuckles, Whitewash, Tubby and Jeff. Whitewash, a completely stereo-typical depiction of an African American, was Timely’s first recurring black character. This issue features a cover by Alex Schomburg. Nobody could fill a cover with action like him. There is so much going on in this cover that you could spend a half an hour taking in the details of the battle. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified NM 9.4. According to the CGC census, this copy is tied with one other as the highest graded copy they have seen.
