Item Description
Published by Gilberton Publishing, this is the 1A / HRN 21 edition of Classic Comics #21. The issue was reprinted almost a dozen times, but this is considered the very first edition. It features adaptations of three classic mystery stories starting with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Sign of the Four” featuring his immortal detective, Sherlock Holmes. Next up is Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, and the book closes with Guy de Maupassant’s “The Flayed Hand.” Each story is truly considered a classic and therefore, belonged in this title. It was the fervent hope of the creator of Classic Comics, Albert Kanter, that these adaptations would inspire readers to go back to the original stories themselves. With issue # 35, the book would be re-titled “Classics Illustrated.” The art in this book was done by Louis Zansky, Allen Simon, and Arnold Hicks. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC–certified VF 8.0. According to their census, this copy is the second highest grade copy CGC have seen.
