Item Description
This gorgeous book is jam-packed with Golden Age excitement. The first Air Fighters Comics issue came out in November of 1941. It took a year for issue #2, (this one), to hit the stands, but when it did, it caught on immediately with a plane-crazy America. Seldom has a single issue introduced so many enduring characters. The most memorable has to be Airboy. He proved so popular that within three years, the Publisher, Hillman Periodicals, had him take over the title of the book. This issue contains his very first appearance as well as his origin. The book also introduces Iron Ace, Black Angel, The Flying Dutchman and Skywolf. Having solid heroes is part of selling a comic, but what makes someone reach for one issue over another is the cover. Charles Biro created one of the most graphic and disturbing covers of the Golden Age. (That is Airboy in the background). He also contributes a story. Other prominent writers in this issue are Harry Stein and Dick Wood. Among the featured artists are Mort Leav, Mort Fujitani, and Harry Sahle. The pages are cream to off-white. It is CGC-certified VF/NM 9.0. According to the CGC Census, this is the second highest graded copy. CGC has also noted that the book is part of the Rockford Collection. The cover proclaims that this is the “Greatest Comic Book Yet!!” Cover dated November 1942, it just might have been.
