Item Description
Hillman Periodicals, the publisher of this title, knew they had a winner when Airboy first showed up in the previous issue. They also seemed to like covers that were absolutely packed with excitement and information. This is an amazing cover that shows the storytelling skills of its artist, Charles Biro. After the reader’s eyes have traveled over the newsprint and the exclamations, they finally rest on the figure of Airboy inside a small plane with batwings. He is flipping his thumb back at an unseen enemy and telling them where to get off! He looks so small that his image comes as a relief after so much information. In one fell swoop Biro perfectly conveys Airboy’s attitude and strength. This is only Airboy’s second appearance and the first time that he made such a big splash on a cover. Biro also contributes art on the interior. Airboy is not the only character to make a big splash. The issue contains the origin of Skywolf. Another important character makes his first appearance, The Heap and the story tells of his origin. Artists contributing to the issue include Bob Fugi, Fred Kida, Harry Shale, and Al Camy. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC graded VF- 7.5. According to the CGC census, this is the third highest grade in existence. They also acknowledge the book to be part of The Rockford pedigree.
