Item Description
Produced in early 1944 at the height of World War Two, this book captures the patriotic fervor of the day in all its glory. Many collectors place great value on a good looking flag cover. The image of Airboy holding the tattered remains of the Japanese flag while standing in front of the Red, White, and Blue, firing a blazing machine gun is one of the most memorable flag covers you will ever find. The danger that Airboy and Sky Wolf face is palpable. Take a look at the bullets flying through Sky Wolf’s clothes. They are so close to the skin that they are destroying the fabric as they pass through. While Hillman Periodicals would often fill their covers with as much information and art as they possibly could, this one is almost perfectly composed and balanced. The word balloons do not distract from the action and the colors used create a striking image. Airboy was such a popular character that with issue #23 he took over the title. The book lasted until 1953 when it was canceled with issue #v10 #4. This book features art by Tony DiPreta and Bob Fujitani. Back up characters appearing in this issue include Iron Ace, Black Angel and the Flying Dutchman. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF/NM 9.0. According to the CGC census, this is the highest graded copy known to exist.
