Item Description
Airboy was 12 years old when he debuted in issue #2 of this title. Unlike many other heroes of the day, he actually aged as time and the War, went on. This cover is notable because it shows an Airboy that appears a bit older than the previous issue. The book, Air Fighters, wore its patriotism on its sleeve. The image of a mummified Nazi, complete with swastika and cross, moves the patriotic feeling into the world of horror. While the early covers of the title were crowded with action and hyperbole (the “Greatest Comic Ever!”), Hillman Periodicals seems to have made a conscious decision to move to simpler, better balanced images. While the figure of the Nazi dominates the cover size-wise, it is the colors of Airboy that attract the first glance. This demonstrates the company’s had faith in their hero’s ability to attract potential readers on the newsstand. Airboy proved to be so popular that, with issue #23, he was given the title. Under his name, it lasted until 1953. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF/NM 9.0. According to the CGC census, this is the highest graded copy known to exist. CGC has also acknowledged the book as part of the Rockford pedigree.
