Item Description
The cover is a beautiful mixture of horror and heroism. It also features an Airboy who appears to have grown into his late teens. (Remember, he was 12 when he made his debut in issue #2). The horror aspect of the cover is enhanced by the artist’s choice to silhouette the emerging half-Airboy/half-monster against a bright full moon. The darkness of the background enhances the brightness of Airboy’s familiar costume and, at the same time, emphasizes the word balloons. There is also a small figure in the background that appears to be shooting at Airboy. The figure’s status as a hero or villain is unclear. However, note that the bullets are actually breaking Airboy’s chains. While the cover is not the most egregious example of political incorrectness you could find, it ranks right up there. The incorrectness comes not so much from the images, but from the text along the bottom. ”You can’t turn a white man like Airboy into a Jap with just mud!... But a white man like Airboy can turn a Jap’s plan into mud....” Artists contributing to this issue include Fuje and Giunta. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF/NM 9.0. According to the CGC Census, this is the highest know graded copy they have see. CGC acknowledges that this book is part of the Rockford pedigree.
