Item Description
Created by Will Eisner, the Blackhawk team is one of the most successful and long lived in comic’s history. Using concepts and ideas contributed by Bob Powell and Chuck Cuidera, Eisner came up with an international group of air fighters that lasted well into the Silver Age. (Quality Comics, the publisher, went out of business in 1956. DC took over the title with issue #108). They first appeared in Military Comics #1 (Aug 1941) and were so popular that they quickly got their own title. (The first 8 issues were called Uncle Sam). For a long while they were featured in two separate titles. Of all the artists who worked on the title, the one most identified with the group is Reed Crandall. His cover art for this issue features a nice shot of the team in a thoughtful moment. The book also features art by Bill Ward. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF/NM 9.0. According to their census, this is the second highest graded copy. The Blackhawks fought everything from Nazis to Commies to monsters to aliens. Cover dated Spring 1948, this issue is a perfect example of the Blackhawk’s transition from the World War II years into the start of the fifties.
