Item Description
The diminutive hero Doll Man first appeared in Feature Comics #27 Dec 1939. Created by legend Will Eisner, he was brought to life by the skilled art of Lou Fine. Less than two years later, he was given his own title. This may seem like a long time, but remember that it often took 6 months or more for publishers to find out how a book was actually being received by the public. It all comes down to sales figures and eventually, it appeared that Doll Man was a hit. 1941 was an incredibly busy year for Quality Comics. They were busy building their own stable of fantastic comic heroes. In the summer they brought out Plastic Man and Blackhawk showed up in Military Comics. That fall they introduced this book as a 64-page quarterly. Doll Man’s success was solid and this title lasted until 1953. The book features Doll Man (by Cassone), The Black Gondolier and several others. The cover image is simplistic and succeeds through the use of one very important image. By having Doll Man burst through the page holding a gun over his head, the reader instantly gets an idea of the scale that Doll Man is working on. That sense of scale is backed up by the appearance of a full sized hand coming through after him. The possibilities of a hero this small immediately become intriguing. It is almost a masterpiece of design. The art is very realistic and from the anatomy and the detail, it looks like something that Gil Kane would have studied over and over as a kid. A far as the cover goes, what color creates a sense of urgency and importance? Red. The red used in the background almost threatens to swallow the actual action. The pages are white. The book is CGC-certified VF- 7.5. It is tied with one other copy as the third highest graded copy CGC has seen. It is certified as being part of the Edgar Church (Mile High) pedigree. $9,000.
