Item Description
L.B. Cole’s cover art is some of the most notorious in the history of comics. Cole is known as one of the most influential and collectible artists of the Golden Age. From his creation of Plastic Man to the covers he did for other books, nothing comes close to the horrific terror that this cover portrays. Satan is cackling with glee as those around him are condemned to flames. It is seriously striking image. Published by Rural Home in the fall of 1945, this book was actually printed twice. The second edition did not have the publisher’s name. Cole is not the only name artist to work on this issue. Tony Di Preta handles some of the interiors. Other characters appearing in this issue include The Black Rider, The Boy Magician and the Collector. The pages are off-white to white. The book has been graded FN+ 6.5 by GCG. There are only 3 books in existence graded in a higher condition. The highest graded copy is a s 7.5. The cover is very bright. The only defect is the stress along the spine. That does not detract from the power of this cover. It looks like a woodcut from the days of antiquity.
