Item Description
The title lasted five issues (#1 was called Unknown World). It is a curious and very worthwhile note to the saga of Fawcett Publishing. Known to collectors as the house that built Captain Marvel, it is a bit strange to see such a ghoulish and frightening themed book as this one published under their umbrella. That is what makes this book so sought after. In 1951, Fawcett won another round in their long court case with National Periodicals (DC). However, DC appealed and the whole legal fiasco started all over again. In addition, the comics industry was changing. More and more publishers were going away from superheroes and in the direction of romance and horror. Fawcett, who had published romance as far back as 1939, had no problem. They were one of the first publishers to organize their creative departments. Early on, they had established a writers department and an artistic department, so they knew how to produce comic books in an organized and professional manner. In 1952, this title came along and shocked everyone. Some collectors see this and the company’s other horror book of the time, Beware Terror Tales, as direct swipes from EC. The standout feature for all five issues was the painted covers by Norm Saunders. Since the thirties he had been painting covers for Pulps and magazines. With so much experience, he had developed a masterful sense of color and space that looks truly effortless. Look at this issue’s cover; he used the dark magenta of blood as a background while the image of death calmly holds a mirror up for the reader to see. We catch the reflection of a horrific murder only seconds before it comes to pass. Is he showing us the possible future? Or is he showing us something that has already occurred? The woman dominates the image and she is clad in virginal white. The pages are white. The book is CGC-certified NM- 9.2. The CGC census lists this as the highest graded copy they have seen. The book is acknowledged to be part of the White Mountain pedigree. Within a year of this book’s publication, Fawcett left the comic book business.
