Item Description
With their square-bound spines and incredibly high page counts, Dell Giants have seldom survived in high grade. The Giants started in 1949 with a 132-page issue titled “Christmas Parade.” After that issue, the page count was cut to 100 for the next ten years. The contents of the Giants were as varied as the contents of Dell’s Four Color title. While Dell did not cross licensing lines when they published each Giant, they did do a lot of Disney themed issues. Other characters that received a Dell Giant include Tom and Jerry, and Bugs Bunny. An issue like this one, themed along a concept, is actually a rarity in the line. Even when Dell began to sequentially number their issues, they stuck with cartoon and licensed characters. This issue’s historical theme is an anomaly in their history. With a November cover date, it was almost certainly published to capitalize on both current elections and the arrival of another school year. Take into account the heavier cardstock used for the cover, and the exceptionally high page count, and Dell Giants could almost be considered an early version of today’s trade paperbacks. The book also features classic art by John Buscema. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified NM 9.4 by CGC. The CGC census lists this copy as the highest graded issue they have ever seen.
