Item Description
This is one of the cornerstone books in the history of DC and it is also the beginning of what would quickly become known as the All-American Group. While technically separate from DC proper, they shared printing, distribution and in house advertising. In 1939, Charlie Gaines went into partnership with Harry Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz to publish two comic books, Movie Comics and this one, All-American Comics. Gaines had a lot of experience with reprint books. In 1934, he had put a 10 cent sticker on promotional copies of Famous Funnies and dropped them off at a newsstand to see how they would do. They sold out. He had also put together Popular Comics for Dell in 1936. So, when he decided to create his own company, it was only natural that he focused on the reprints that made up this issue. However, it includes Sheldon Mayer’s Scribbly (his first DC appearance) and Hop Harrigan by Jon Blummer. Among the strips reprinted in this issue you will find Mutt and Jeff, Skippy, Ben Webster, Toonerville Folks, and Reg’lar Fellas. This issue also sees the first appearance of Red, White and Blue. Within a year, the book cut back on the reprints and introduced new characters such as the Green Lantern. The title lasted 102 issues, finally seeing cancellation in 1948. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified FN+ 6.5 by CGC. This copy is tied with one other copy as the second highest graded copy in their census.
