Item Description
Early Batman covers would often place the lead characters against a solid color without a cluttered background. This allowed the reader to easily spot Batman and Robin on the newsstands without too much trouble. The cover did not necessarily need to reflect any of the stories inside, it just had to draw the reader’s attention. This one by Jerry Robinson succeeds on a grand scale. The brightness of the red makes it almost impossible to ignore. The color of each stallion plays off of the colors inside each character’s costume. The black under Robin keeps his red chest plate from being lost in the red background and provides an excellent contrast for his yellow cape. Of course, talking about the coloring choices is a nice thing, but the most important part of the cover is the smile on each of their faces. They make the reader feel welcome. This issue features the first appearance of the “skinny” Alfred. It also has a Penguin appearance. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified VF+ 8.5. According to the CGC Census, this copy is tied with three others as the third highest graded copy they have seen.
