Item Description
The Flash made his debut in this book in 1940. Many people think that the book was named after him, but it wasn’t. DC intended the book to be an anthology title and over the years many characters have come and gone through its printed pages. The covers generally alternated between The Flash and Hawkman, but this issue’s cover is really something special. It showcases Black Canary, created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino. Her first appearance was as a supporting character in a Johnny Thunder story, who was also appearing as a regular feature in Flash Comics. Within a year, Black Canary took over his slot in Flash Comics and that is how we ended up with this fantastic cover. This issue contains her first solo story. When Johnny Thunder left the JSA, she also took his place on the team and lasted there until the end in 1951. The cover is an early appearance by the work of Carmine Infantino and it ranks among his best. The solid white background makes it difficult for collectors to find high grade copies. The color choice really emphasizes her arrival on the scene and highlights her costume. It also brings out Flash and Hawkman, two colorful characters in their own right. Artists featured on the interior include Bob Oksner, Lee Elias and Joe Kubert. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified VF 8.0 by CGC.
