Item Description
Hawkman was one of the earliest successes of the Golden Age. Like the Flash, he also appeared in the first issue of this title. Created by Gardner Fox, Hawkman has always attracted the best artists. In his earlier days, Sheldon Moldoff handled the art, with Joe Kubert, the cover artist for this issue, following him on the title. Their work on the character is among their career highlights. Both ended up being heavily associated with the appearance of the character. Hawkman was notable for being one of the only Golden Age superheroes to maintain a relationship with a woman. Hawkgirl first appeared on All-Star Comics #5 and in issue #24 of this title, she became Hawkman’s full time partner. Hawkman and Flash alternated covers on this book and Hawkgirl often appeared by Hawkman’s side on his covers. The cover to this issue is one of Kubert’s most impressive. By placing the ghostly menaces inside the red background, he implies that they may actually be a figment of Hawkman’s imagination. Hawkman is stood in the spotlight alone. This really helps emphasize his great wings and colorful costume. This issue also features a retelling of the origin of the Flash. Robert Kanigher contributes a story and the artists featured inside include Paul Reinman, Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified VG/FN 5.0. This is the last issue of Flash Comics until The Flash #105 appears in 1959.
