"Puck" is widely considered America's first successful humor magazine and is best known for its satire of political issues of the day. Magazine was founded by Joseph Keppler Sr. and began publishing in Mar., 1871. Book was published by Puck Press and features 56 cartoons chosen by Keppler as his best. Frontispiece features a portrait of Keppler, who has signed in black ink below. Some of the great contents include political cartoons about Ulysses S. Grant, Rip Van Winkle as the Democratic Party, Democratic Party as shipwrecked damsel about to be savaged by Tammany, the death of President James Garfield, great cartoon of Grover Cleveland as King of the Jungle (a lion), the death of King Wilhelm of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, the rise of prohibition and many others, each with opposite page having text referring to cartoon.
