Item Description
5x22.25" long 4-panel bw ink daily strip for Jan. 29, 1938. Art was for "Valley Of The Goons" storyline and shows Olive Oyl in Goonskin being lead by Goons to execution. First panel shows Alice the Goon walking in front of Olive dropping carrots at her feet as another Goon jabs her behind with spear. Second panel features Popeye and King Blozo (also shown in Goonskin) with King saying "Well, The Goons Are Throwing Olive To George" in reference to an off-panel Sea Hag imitating a sea monster with frightening sound effects. Third panel features Popeye running through brick wall and saying "Nobody Ain't Go'ner Throw Olive To Nobody!" Last panel features rare instance of Goon speaking English as he prepares to throw Olive over cliff, saying "Bride Of George, The Sea Monster!" Olive acting in typical fashion, screaming "E-e-e-ek! Popeye! Popeye! Save Me!" as Sea Hag's wailing sound effects are seen at bottom corner. Last panel also features King Features Syndicate Inc. copyright paste-over. "1-29" date beside paste-over. This story line was begun by Popeye creator E.C. Segar but due to his long period of illness prior to his early death from liver disease in 1938, this strip was drawn by Segar fill-in artist Doc Winner. Pin holes along top margin and 1-5/8" slice to first panel across nose of Goon with spear, though this is not that detracting from overall appearance of strip which remains clean and Exc. Great content.
