Item numbers 1 though 975 in auction 196
Item Description
Superbly hand-engraved coat button complete with reverse shank known to be originally from the mid-Hudson River Valley region of New York. Hand-engraved design rather than being struck by a die and the name "Whitcomb" was passed along as the engraver's name. Button once had thin gilt plating that evaporated over two centuries but the remaining brass finish is exceptionally lustrous and totally free of corrosion, pitting and wear of any significance. Featured is a displayed eagle, without inscription, similar to those in Albert's book listed as WI12-WI14, but he does not list this much more detailed design. The size is 1.25" or 33mm. The eagle holds a branch with leaves in one talon and 3 arrows in the opposite talon. A finely detailed shield design is on the chest. The eagle's head is surrounded by 13 indents representing a star for each colony and the indents are surrounded by engraved accent lines forming a glory or sunburst effect above the eagle's head. The extreme outer rim edge has accent line of tiny notches. Unlisted and a unique hand-engraved design in Exc. condition and displaying essentially Mint with bright luster. A gorgeous example and Rare, especially in this condition.
