Item Description
Santa is not to be seen among this group of 16 but it includes many interesting and graphic pieces. Primary among these is the very first "A Merry Christmas" greeting coming from the button maker "Compliments Of The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, N.J." Has their backpaper design used as early as their first year of button making in 1896 and then abandoned after 1898. All the following items are buttons except second item stickpin reading "A Merry Christmas And Happy New Year." No maker's name but quite early. The next "Merry Christmas" is also very early with backpaper from a firm in Chicago "Wm. H. Dietz." The rest of the pieces are largely 1930s through 1950s with the exception of the last 1 in row 1 and last 2 in row 3 which are 70s or newer. Couple items of note are the cute snowman-like character "Mr. Bingle" and next a carrot-nosed snowman promoting the "Salute To Northern Lights/St. Paul Winter Carnival 1974." Looking closely, we just discovered an error. In row 2, #2 a banking button promotes an early Christmas club and standing next to "The Bank With The Gold Dome" is a small red full figure of Santa with pack. Two other interesting pieces in the group are the "Happy New Year" button issued by newspaper "The Bulletin" and in the bottom row is a Norcross greeting card button of lady with Christmas balls hanging from hat. Condition is Exc. to Mint and all display Mint.
