Item Description
This print is resting on foam core with matching mat, both with overall 22.5x29". The image area inside the mat is 18.5x25". This large print from 1874 has much of its wide top and side margins missing but yet when covered with mat, displays totally intact and extremely Fine. Pictured is Sumner pointing to pages on his writing stand. His finger rests on the one reading "Equal Rights To All." The one below that reads "The Great Northern Hammer Will Descend To Smite The Wrong/Do Not Let The Civil Rights Bill Fail." The sheet at top reads "The Scholarly War And Slavery/Remnant Of A Barbarous Age." The book at the desk's corner reads "The Statesman/Freedom/National/Slavery/Sectional." Tiny text at lower right reads "C.H. Sumner The Great Senator And Statesman/Born January 6th, 1811. Died March 11th, 1874." Lithographer identified at bottom left as "Published By H. Schill 36 Division St. N.Y." With the mat in place, upper left bkg. has .5" rub line, .5" dia. area with darker spot. On the far right is single dark .25" dot while below is 3/8" tan dot. The piece could be framed using the current foam core and mat or it could easily be transferred to some other type of backing. While the margin damage is extensive, the image area remains most attractive. Only example we've seen.
