Auction #197 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 991 in auction 197
Item Description
This item measures 1-3/8x1-5/8" and is missing a wire loop from the top edge as is typical with this series. This is the most desirable image from a set picturing prominent American military and political leaders issued by Abbott around 1862. In Auction #196, we had the version with pink cardboard reverse but this example has dark blue. It reads "Abraham Lincoln. President Of The United States. Firm To Maintain And Defend The Union." Because this is a large size tintype and protected by only a low-relief brass frame, these pieces often suffer much surface wear and quite frequently the reverse label is damaged or completely missing. This example has about 12 tiny black dots, most under 1/16", on the left bkg. but only one shows on his image near the bottom as a tiny black dot. The only actual loss of emulsion is a 1/16" dot off the very bottom right corner. A large size Lincoln tintype image still displaying Fine.
