Item Description
Pair of 1.5" buttons with identical text but in two different day-glo colors with center reading "Vote Jerry Rubin Mayor/A New Community." Rims read "Withdraw From Vietnam, Rent Control, End Police Harrassment, Eliminate Poverty." Rubin lead some of the earliest protests against the war in Vietnam and was a co-founder of the Youth International Party (Yippies) with Abbie Hoffman. In 1967 he decided to run for Mayor of Berkeley as a lark but once into the campaign he took it seriously and ran a very issue-oriented effort, speaking at shopping centers and shaking hands on street corners. He wore a suit and tie and issued a 24-page booklet using a semi-psychedelic format to present 24 well-reasoned stands on local and national issues. He was disappointed by his distant fourth place finish and returned to his more radical political organizing efforts. Both buttons are essentially Mint.
