Item Description
Three of these are 1.5" and the fourth is a 1.5" square. In 1967 Lowenstein was one of the 3 people who started the "Dump Johnson" movement and also approached Robert Kennedy about challenging Johnson in the 1968 Democratic primaries. These buttons relate to his successful 1968 election to congress and/or his defeat in elections between 1970 and 1976. In 1971 Lowenstein became head of Americans For Democratic Action and also spearheaded the Dump Nixon movement, which earned him a place on the Nixon enemies list. He had other unsuccessful congressional runs in 1972, a 1974 senate bid and 1976. The button showing the peace symbol and naming additional candidates Burstin and Sherman has a small mark on the top edge in our photo but this was just a dirt smudge now removed. All 4 items are N. Mint to Mint and display Mint.
