Item Description
Each of these is 7/8" issued around 1898 as giveaways by American Pepsin Gum. In addition to that company's backpaper, the buttons also were issued with W&H backpapers or with the W&H name stamped on metal backs. 35 are version with the American Pepsin gum papers. Our book Buttons In Sets lists 40 seen but we've added one to that which is the button in our photo Row 1, #1 showing an "American Fireman." We think this belongs as part of the set and it is followed by their insignia with the caption "American Firemen." This group represents 39 of the 41 we now consider in the set. The only 2 missing are "Jr. Order United American Mechanics (only showing their insignia and without text) and one with the Masonic insignia without text. Among the more famous groups represented here are Brotherhood Of Railroad Trainmen, Elks, Templars, Grand Army of the Republic, Red Men, Knights of Pithius, Masonic, Modern Woodmen of America and Modern Woodmen of the World. The Patrons of Husbandry button has a little gray age tone on the cream bkg. and one of the Foresters buttons has tiniest edge marks. About 37 of the 39 display essentially Mint. From the Marshall Levin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
