Item Description
Exceptional prototype from the late 1930s designed as presentation piece for ad director/ad agency to convince them to use licensed characters. 11x17" thin artboard folder has tracing paper applied to front/back covers. Front features original art in lead/colored pencil plus painted "Popular Comics Will Move Your Merchandise" text. At center is large dollar bill symbol covered by character portraits of Little Orphan Annie, Herby, Moon Mullins, Denny Dimwit, Uncle Walt, Dick Tracy, Lillums, Andy Gum, Smilin' Jack, Smokey Stover and Kayo. Folder opens to reveal 3-D stiff paper pop-up scene with art done in pen and ink watercolor depicting grocery store interior. To the left of counter is sales promoter while to the right is Pete the Tramp but dressed like Uncle Willie. Pop-up also features 5 different displays and signs featuring characters promoting products although on 4 of these the product information has touch-ups to remove actual product names. Front pop-up is large display band featuring Maggie and Jiggs and contains "Libby's Cans." The other signs/display feature Smitty and Herby, The Gumps, Lord Plushbottom and Emmy, Dick Tracy and Tracy Jr. For some reason, right front end of counter has small V-shaped piece cut out removing part of accent column. Noted for accuracy but very minor and as made. Front pop-up has split at centerfold where boy's arm attaches to mother's hand as well as additional fold split but these are both easily repairable. Both inside and outside have scattered trace of aging as originally assembled/constructed but nothing detracts from the exceptional art. Blank back. An incredible prototype. Fine. Unique. From the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold. Comes with Hake's COA.
