Auction #198 Part I
Item numbers 1-499 in auction 198
Item Description
12.75x26.25" quality frame contains original pen and ink art that has been professionally double-matted to 4x17.5". Art is for Feb. 20 daily strip from c. 1920s. Four-panel "The Barney Google Derby" story features art by Barney Google creator Billy de Beck in which Barney Google races Spark Plug, leading him w/tin cans dangled from a stick. They win the race, and Barney is seen on the back of a train saying "...'At's The First Time In History A Race Was Won By A Can." While this is not the first race Spark Plug won (Barney was given him as a present in Jul., 1922 and won his first race Jul.-Aug., 1922) it is a nice, early strip featuring the comedic duo. A few 1/8" spots of staining on first panel, but strip displays Exc. overall as framed.
