Item Description
Lot of 4 single panel pen and ink cartoon original art, each on thin drawing board. First piece is 15.5x18.5" and is illustrated by "Minneapolis Journal" cartoonist C. L. Bartholomew (Bart). c. 1904 cartoon deals w/Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905. Depicted here is Russia's Czar Nicholas II riding "Russia" bear w/imperial crown and mitre w/"Absolutism" tag trailing behind him, "Government Plans, Monarchy, War Plans" papers in front of him. Large "Beaurocracy" bundle is on his back. Cartoon is titled "Russia Has Another Disczarmament Position In Mind." Second piece is 15x17.25" and is again by Bartholomew titled "Turning The Other Cheek." Depicts "Russia" w/"Mukden Land Defeat" bandage about his jaw, swollen cheeks reading "Land Cheek" and "Sea Cheek," this having "Naval Defeat" patch. Stronger-looking "Japan" rolls up sleeves. c. 1905. Next piece is 19x19" and depicts Uncle Sam standing on banks of port choked w/"American Commerce" ships which are held at bay by looming skeletal figure marked "German Terrorism" in sea. This figure dual-welds guns labeled "Sub-Marine" and "U-Boat." Cartoon is titled "The Great American Blockade" and references the effect the German Navy had on American shipping in the days of WWI. Cartoon is by "Columbus Dispatch" Billy Ireland. Last piece is 13x17.25" and is titled "Weighed And Found Wanting" and was done by "Boston Post" cartoonist William "Norman" Ritchie. Cartoon shows Great Britain and U.S. naval admirals despondent over announcement that "Air Planes Are Making Battle Ships Obsolete." c. 1941, just prior to America's involvement in WWII. All come w/matching mats, each w/cartoon title label at bottom, last 2 having cartoonist's name at top. Exc. display.
