Item Description
13.5x16.5” image area. Original art by R.O. Evans, Sr. Matted and captioned by the original collector who presented this as part of a traveling editorial cartoon exhibition. In 1917 Wilson appointed Hoover as head of the U.S. Food Administration. Hoover believed “Food Will Win The War.” He established set days to encourage people to avoid eating particular foods to save them for soldiers’ rations (i.e. Meatless Mondays, Wheatless Wednesdays and When In Doubt Eat Potatoes). This program helped reduce consumption of foodstuffs needed overseas and avoided rationing at home. It was dubbed “Hooverizing” by government publicists. This illustration done in grease pencil on artboard shows Hoover as U.S Marshal pointing gun at rat-like food gambler. Caption below reads “His Game Is Up/Food Gambler: One Can’t Even Make A Decent Living Nowadays.” Interesting and well done. Displays N. Mint.
