Item Description
10.5x14” cover for Jun. 7, 1943 issue which features a bw photo cover of “Captain Foss, U.S.M.C. – America’s No. 1 Ace.” This is in reference to Foss’s role as a United States Marine Corps fighter ace, flying with the Marine Fighting Squadron 115 VMF-115 as its Executive Officer. Foss later received the Medal of Honor in 1943, and he is shown on this cover of “LIFE” with the medal about his neck. Foss later went on to become the governor of South Dakota in 1955 and included here is a 7/8” dia. “Joe Foss For Governor” campaign button showing a bw photo of him. Exc. Also of note, Foss later served as the first Commissioner of the American Football League in 1959. Foss has signed in blue ink on cover of magazine “My Best Wishes To Roy Marecondo. God Bless You! Joe Foss, CMH VMF-121 USMCR ‘26’ Confirmed - Grumman F4F Wildcat-5 March ’96.” Magazine cover has lt. handling wear with color rubs, some of which Foss has signed over. Fine with bold signature.
