Item Description
Lot consists of a total of 10 pieces for the 15-chapter Columbia serial released in 1955. Starred John Hart as Captain Africa “Mighty Jungle Adventurer.” This was the long-awaited sequel to Columbia’s 1943 “The Phantom.” Produced by Sam Katzman who refused to pay King Features their royalty demands and changed the name to “Captain Africa.” The 1943 Phantom still appeared in this serial via a vast amount of stock footage. Of major note is the fact that all of the items in this lot with the exception of the pressbook feature image of Captain Africa in costume near identical to The Phantom including striped trunks (this outfit was altered/updated in the artwork of the pressbook itself). Art is by Glenn Cravath, an illustrator for magazines, newspaper and film studies. His works include Captain Video, Terry and the Pirates, among others and he is historically known for his work on King Kong (see proof sheet set #2115). Pressbook is 10.75x16” with 12 pages. Great art and film photos throughout plus rare promotional items shown include a 3-sheet cut-out, coloring sheet, club card, incredible 3x9’ fabric valance plus poster, lobby card and still designs. Four different 8x10” glossy stills are included (these are shown on page 7 of the pressbook) but as previously mentioned featured the original costume design. One includes hand-done white highlight accents. Action scenes include Captain Africa fighting a lion, gorilla and alligator. Accompanying one of the stills is 8.5x11.5” sheet of artist tracing paper with rough sketch of Captain Africa fighting gorilla, artwork slightly different from final image. Second piece of original art in this lot is also the highlight of the lot. 7.25x13.75” artboard with artist tracing paper overlay on top two-thirds. Art by Cravath in pencil is the design used for the 3-sheet poster and includes hand-lettered title. Pencil rough art includes large image of Captain Africa at center surrounded by related film images of jungle explorers, natives, animals, etc. plus smaller action scenes at bottom around blank area where film information was added on 3-sheet itself. Three final pieces are Photostats of 1 and 3-sheets plus photo image of Captain Africa (in Phantom costume). Scattered lt. wear/aging but overall lot remains VF to Exc. An exceptional group with unique art.
