Scott, who served in the military under every president from Jefferson to Lincoln, became a national hero of the Mexican-American War. In 1852 the Whigs shoved aside their incumbent president Millard Fillmore and nominated Scott as their candidate. At the start of the Civil War he was Union general-in-chief and he devised the long-term Anaconda Plan to defeat the Confederacy. This item is a multi-leveled oval gutta percha frame 2-7/8” tall with a glass cover at its center opening about 1.5” tall. The reverse of the piece has a brass loop for suspension and a pair of brass pins which hold the original cardboard cover over the tintype photo 1-3/8x1-5/8”. Small nicks to the cardboard where the pins are inserted and small chip off the bottom right corner of the cardboard but the frame itself and the tintype are N. Mint. Scott is pictured in his elaborate military uniform. In 1856 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, becoming the first American since George Washington to hold that rank.
