Item Description
Lot consists of 4.75x7.5” folded letter and 3.25x5.5” envelope. Note is apparent reply to autograph request and reads “Written At The Request Of John Pinkham. Lewis Cass Washington Aug. 16, 1850.” Envelope reads in his hand “Free/Lewis Cass.” Addressed to Boston with “FREE” postal stamp from “Aug. 17. Washington D.C.” Letter is folded as mailed. Upper corner has tiny “Paris” embossed in the stationery. Envelope has .5” tear at top and is missing back flap plus .5” tear by remains of a wax seal not affecting front. Envelope is VG. Letter is VF. Written two years after presidential loss while he again represented Michigan as U.S. Senator. Comes with Hake’s COA.
