Item Description
2.25x2.75” stiff cardboard shield which served to “Admit One.” Both sides have black text on silver bkg. Couple of exceedingly tiny specks of silver paper mostly off the reverse edge of the shield. Condition overall remains Exc. After his 1896 loss, Bryan spent much of his time in 1897 maintaining his position as leader of the Democratic Party. He toured the country advocating bi-metalism. This event took place 2 days shy of exactly one year following his historic July 9, 1896 Cross of Gold speech. The front of this ticket names 2 men on the arrangements committee with larger text reading “Hon. William J. Bryan/Central Park Eighth St. Entrance/Wednesday, July 7, 1897/3.30 P.M./For Seat In Reserved Space/Admit One.” The reverse of this piece has the entire concluding paragraph of Bryan’s famous speech with the famous concluding words “…You Shall Not Press Down Upon The Brow Of Labor This Crown Of Thorns. You Shall Not Crucify Mankind Upon A Cross Of Gold.” Rare and the only example known to us.
