Item Description
Lot of 3. Called the “Fight Of The Century,” this fight took place in Reno, NV in front of 20,000 people. Prior to the fight, the former undefeated champion James J. Jeffries came out of retirement to reclaim the heavyweight championship for the white race. “I Should Step Into The Ring Again And Demonstrate That A White Man Is King Of Them All” Jeffries said. He had not fought in six years and Johnson proved stronger and more nimble. In the 15th round Jeffries had been knocked down twice for the first time in his career. His people called it quits to prevent Johnson from knocking him out. The “Fight Of The Century” earned Johnson $65,000 and silenced the critics. These three 3.5x5.5” post cards reference the fight. The “If The Eclipse Looks Like This?” card is centered slightly to the right. Unused. Dogs “Pulling For Jeff” is postmarked July 5th, 1910 from Reno with content “The Town Is Completely Filled And We Are Waiting For The Time 12:30 PM To Start The Fight.” Both show lt. corner wear. VF. Last is cartoon “Fireworks On July 4th” with edge stain at bottom. Unused. Lt. age. Fine. An interesting group. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
