Item Description
20.5x25” overall. 11.5x16” image area. Souvenir silk with text at bottom “Las Vegas, New Mexico/July 4th, 1912.” Jack Johnson v. Jim Flynn fight was stopped in ninth round by the sheriff after Flynn continually fouled Johnson by head-butting. Johnson was awarded the fight and successfully defended his world heavyweight title. This black printed on white silk shows full figures of both fighters with tinted gloves/boxing attire. Center is tinted scene of very large hotel/casino on hillside and what appears to be a racetrack in the foreground. Floral accents are displayed around the printed area. All color appears to be true to original application and remains bold. One .5” silk separation at far left corner. Light unevenness of silk is detected when viewed in reflected light. This is trivial in comparison to the bold presentation of the image/text. Exc. Impressive appearence. Professionally framed and double matted. Two scratches at right matted area in Plexiglas. Mentioned for accuracy. Frame Exc. A superbly presented and very rare Jack Johnson item. First we’ve offered. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
