Item Description
3.5x5.5".  c. 1931.  Boxing's second "George Godfrey" was the ring name of Feab S. Williams, a heavyweight boxer from the US state of Alabama from 1919-1937.  Williams never fought for the championship, but held the "Colored Heavyweight Title" during an era prior to the rise of Joe Louis, when the white heavyweight champions drew the color line and would not defend the title against a black man. Facsimile signature.  Stats and caption are in French.  Caption translates to "World Champion Of The Black Race."  Minor corner tip wear and tack hole at top center.  Reverse unused.  Scarce.  VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
