Item Description
Lot of four. 3.5x5.25”. c. 1910. All are French. Text at the bottom of the two printed cards loosely translates to “Black Boxer From Texas, USA Born 1885.” Weight and body measurements below. Both are postally used with 1911 cancellations. Lt. crease on one, aging, lt. spotting on other. Both still display fine. Last two are from a numbered series #s 92-102. Unused. Script notation in red ink at bottom of one translates “23 Year Old California” followed by weight and body measurements. Both of these real photo postcards are Exc. McVea (McVey) was a famous contender in the earliest 20th century. Only lost 16 of his 96 documented fights which were held in at least 10 countries. His greatest wins include two victories over both Sam Langford and Harry Wills which won him the “Colored Heavyweight Title” on two separate occasions. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
