Item Description
8.5x11”. 36 pages. Sep. 15, 1927. Cover by legendary artist John Held Jr. This issue called “Feminine Number.” Two-page article inside by Tom Mix “Who Wins In Chicago?” with opening line “Much Controversy Is Bein Exercised These Days About The Forthcomin Dempsey-Tunney Dispute.” Tom Mix is pictured in iconic cowboy hat and ready for the rodeo outfit. Cartoon on lower page and upper second page referring to first Dempsey-Tunney fight. Second page with photo caption “Tom Mix And Jack Dempsey Sparring In The Mix Gymnasium, Where Jack Did His Preliminary Training.” Issue also includes full page cartoon of Tex Rickard considered to be the most dynamic fight promoter in history, selling ringside seats with one hand as he holds up 2 marionette boxers with the other. In the clouds is P.T. Barnum looking down at Rickard’s success with his thought “What A Piker I Was!” Caption at bottom reads “There’s One Every Split Second Now.” An obvious reference to Barnum’s famous quote “There’s A Sucker Born Every Minute.” Interesting to note that the second fight which is the subject of the Tom Mix article ultimately grossed $2,800,000. A handsome sum for 1927. Two great boxing references in one none-assuming, non-sports magazine. Lt. wear. Cover VF. Contents Exc.
