Item Description
11x46” overall. 9.5x44” image area. Text on top of grandstand reads “Baer-Uzcudun Fight/20 Rounds-Uzcudun Won/Reno, Nevada/July 4th, 1931/Chas. Z Bailey-Photo/Los Angeles, Cal.” A marvelous scene of the combatants in the ring between rounds and the huge crowd under the broiling Nevada sun. Temperatures reached 110 degrees and it was reported that the fighters were both blinded by sun stroke for several days after the fight. This 20-round battle, promoted by Jack Dempsey was to be Baer’s last defeat until his stunning loss to Jimmy Braddock, 5 years later. Interesting to note the huge crowd and sea of white summer mens’ hats. The black man near the ring wears a white shirt with a sign on the back reading “Ice Cream 10¢.” Image has three 1.25" emulsion cracks along bottom margin, 9.5" vertical crack appears 4" from left end. None affect photo center detail and text. Offers a spectacular view in a 4’ long format. Image overall VF. Wooden gold painted frame shows lt wear with a few scratches. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
