Item Description
Description updated from the printed catalog.9.5x11” overall. 7x9” image area. Souvenir folder w/photo from Jack Dempsey’s restaurant in New York City. Ink notation on front reads “Oct. 1963/Jack-Pete Herman & Mickey.” Photo is of Jack Dempsey with retired all time great Bantam weight world champion Pete Herman and Mickey "Toy Bulldog" Walker, former world welterweight and middleweight campion . Herman fought 142 professional fights with 100 wins/21 by ko. By 1921 he began losing sight in one eye and claimed he became blind in that eye when he fought Johnny Buff in 1921. He fought 5 more times knocking out #1 contender Packy O’Gatty in one round and retired in 1922. Herman eventually became completely blind. After his retirement from the ring, he owned and operated a club in the famed New Orleans French Quarter and it became a New Orleans landmark. This 1963 photo would hold evidence of Herman’s blindness. He died in 1973. This souvenir photo format is typically found with just patrons of the restaurant, not with Jack Dempsey and another boxing world great. Folder inside cover has famous James Montgomery Flagg image of Dempsey-Willard fight. Folder has lt. wear, one bent corner. Fine. Photo shows lt. handling creases, o/w Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
